HUNDREDS OF HEADACHES (IMITREX CURTAIN)

Drugs & Money explores desire in relation to chance and façade, and investigates accumulation as a questionable wealth.  In a politically turbulent time where debt, jobs and healthcare remain at the forefront of American news, questions of what money affords us, and good health enables us to participate in, are front and center in the conversation of how much control we have over our daily lives.  What level of control do we have over our bodies, our paychecks, and our pursuits of happiness. To what ends will we go to obtain control, be it legitimate, false or fleeting?

Hundreds of Headaches (Imitrex Curtain) is a laboriously handmade beaded curtain which contains thin cardboard replicas of the infamous triptan migraine medication, Imitrex (from actual blister packs of the medication). Each cardboard pill represents an Imitrex ingested by the artist. With a playful nod to the mesmerizing beaded curtains of the 70’s, Hundreds of Headaches eludes to the private reality of chronic illness through physical accumulation and the struggle to maintain a facade of wellness in an ableist society.
